Celebrating Success at Toronto Fencing Club
Over the past 3 days Canadian Fencing Federation held it's Canadian Senior National Championship and the first Canadian Selection Circuit at Saskatoon. Toronto Fencing Club owned the podium as far as Ontario clubs go sweeping 9 medals from the various events. In the gold medal bout, young Eleanor Harvey came away with the gold medal and the 2011 Canadian Foil Senior Women's Championship title after defeating Kelleigh Ryan (Canadian National Team Member) from Ottawa. It was double gold for Eleanor who also won the Junior Women's Foil event after defeating Alanna Goldie of Calgary. Ainsely Switzer and Joanne Koble both earned bronze medals in the Epee Senior Women's Championship where a total of 37 women participated in hope of making the podium. In other women's events, Zoe Loh waltzed away with 2 bronze medals in the Y15 and Cadet Women's Foil categories while Hannah Beach took the silver medal in the Cadet Women's Epee event. Toronto Fencing Club men did not shy away from the podium; Matthew McLeod took the silver medal and shared the podium with fellow club member Samuel Gallagher Pelletier who earned a bronze medals in the Epee Senior Men's Championship. As the athletes travel back to Toronto, they each will ponder on how to improve their game and what they will have to do to get ready for their next competitions. All the athletes agree on one thing - they owe their success to the dedicated coaches at Toronto Fencing Club. These athletes are coached by Peter Ho, Andrew Hu, Alice Lu and Josh McGuire. Amazing week for Toronto Fencing Club Several fencers from the Tronto Fencing Club participated in 2 Major fencing tournaments last week. While coach Peter Ho accompanied some of the clubs athletes to Austin, Texas for the North America Cup, coaches Alice Lu and Andrew Hu took the oppourtunity to coach some of their fencers at the Brock Invitation tournament. Brock hosted a total of 20 different Epee and Foil events over the weekend which attracted a total of 458 participants. Toronto Fencing Club made a clean sweep when they took all 4 gold medals in the Men's Epee category. Sam Gardner and seasoned fencer took the gold medal in the Senior Men's category while Sahil Bablani (aged 14) who has been fencing for only 4 years took the gold medals in both Youth 15 and Cadet (under 17) category. Robert Guo (aged 15) took the gold in the Junior Category (under 20). TFC fencers also took 1 silver and 2 bronze medals in the men's category. In Women's Epee, TFC athletes came away with a total of 6 medals; 3 Silver and 3 Bronze. 4 of these medals went to fencers who have been fencing for less than 3 years at the club. In foil, the women came away with 4 medals, 1 silver and 3 bronze while little Alex Cai (aged 11) new to fencing, fenced his way to a bronze medal. Toronto Fencing Club coaches were very proud of their students who waltzed away after that tournament with a total of 17 medals. At the North American Cup held in Austin, Texas, Toronto Fencing Club and Canada's National team member (in both Cadet and Junior) Eleanor Harvey could not be stopped. She took the Gold medal in the Cadet Women's Foil Catergory defeating 118 other fencers. Eleanor also placed 8th out of a 123 fencers in the Junior Foil Category (under 20) which was the top placing for Canada in that category. After all said and done, the fencers did the coaches and club proud, they worked hard and it paid off. After a short break, the club's High Performance Athletes have once again packed their bags and have headed off to Saskatoon with their coaches for the first Canadian Selection Circuit and Seniors National tournament. We wish them all the best. Our Location TFC is located at 50 Prince Andrew Place, Toronto, Ontario. North west of Don Mills Road and Eglinton Avenue.
